Lekala Patterns - Burberry Inspired Coat

I fell in love with this Coat a few months ago when I saw it on Cara Delevingne !

I instantly had to make it !
The shape and fit of the coat  was to DIE for !!

I searched pattern after pattern trying to find the perfect silhouette to make knock off version of the jacket but no luck ! I finally decided to post the jacket as a inspiration pick on Instagram and one of my followers ( katie_and_the_machine) directed me to Lekala Patterns where she had seen the coat . I had never heard of this site so I had to check it out !

The pattern that she suggested was the EXACT coat !! I died ... then revived myself and purchased the SUPER cheap pattern from the site ..

Drawings of the coat :

The pattern was 2.99 , which is the cost of most patterns on that site.

The pattern was a downloable pattern so putting the pieces to together was as it normaly goes for a printable pattern, lots of cutting and taping ! Once I constructed the pattern and got it all cut out I began looking for the perfect fabric ! Most of you may know about my love affair with Fine Fabrics in Norcross Ga , but that is where I found the fabric used for this coat .

The fabric that I chose was a brown corduroy type fabric . Thats really the best way to describe the look/feel of it ... One thing about this store is that they dont really label their fabrics ( besides on each isle) so sometimes its a bit of a guessing game . This fabric was sitting near the Wool area but it doesnt feel like a wool. I loved the texture of the fabric so I decided to get it !

Let me just say that this coat nearly took me out ! I quickly realized that part of the reason that the cost of the pattern was so cheap is because the instructions are VERY limited !
I would categorize this pattern as being advanced . The Princess seams in the front where SUPER difficult for me . The pattern includes very few "notches" to help line up the pieces so I really had to use other resources to help construct the coat . This book was a life saver for me ! Since the instructions where very basic I used this book to help set my sleeves the proper way using sleeve heads and shoulder pads. I also used it to help install my lining for the jacket and create my welt pockets!

With the help of these resources it helped make the process a little less painful , but I really wont be rushing to make another from the site in the near future . On the upside , I learned a tremendous amount from constructing this jacket ! It really taught me to appreciate the illustrations and detailed information in sewing instructions now!  :)

 I LOVE the jacket !
It is super chic and its honestly only the second coat that Ive made for myself since I began sewing !

I used a Challis for the lining with Gold accented reindeer !

I really love this jacket but the construction of it was definitely a SLOW project!

Until Next Time !!

  1. Lovely--it's the unusual seaming that makes it a standout. Lekala is sketchy on details so it is definitely not for a novice. Your time and effort definitely paid off!
